Imogene Bolin, known to many as Ms. “Jean” or simply “Peppi,” has spent nearly a century lighting up every room she enters. Born in Ethridge, Tennessee, on June 22, 1929, her life has woven through the towns of Ethridge, Murfreesboro, Knoxville, and Smyrna, each place shaped by her warmth, her boundless kindness, and that signature beautiful smile.

Her son Bill likes to say that her energy alone earned her the nickname “Peppi”—and it fits. From childhood and through every season of adulthood, Jean’s lively spirit drew people to her. Social gatherings, music-filled afternoons, garden outings, or just a quiet moment with friends—she has always been the one to spark laughter and conversation, to make people feel seen and welcome.



Jean’s dedication to learning stands out in every chapter of her story. She earned her bachelor’s degree from Middle Tennessee State University, then pursued a master’s at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, where she also completed PhD work before deciding to take on a new challenge: law school. She earned her Juris Doctorate from Nashville Law School and, for more than 40 years, practiced family law, helping neighbors and guiding families through some of life’s most important decisions.

Education and service have always gone hand in hand for Jean. Alongside her legal work, she served as a Professor of Political Science at MTSU. In and out of the classroom, she shared her knowledge generously, shaping the minds of future generations and offering her wisdom to all who sought it.

Today, Jean continues to enrich her days with reading, outings to the garden, devotions, and music. Her gentle, soothing smile still lights up the faces of those around her, just as it always has.

She is the proud mother of two children, Bill Bolin and Zan Speight, and her life is a living testament to the power of service, intellect, and kindness. There’s a particular wisdom in her eyes—a quiet assurance that comes from a life spent lifting others up, and a spirit still as bright and joyful as ever.
