Legacy Village of Hendersonville resident Juliana Cramer’s life has been shaped by a love of learning, a heart for service, and a spirit of adventure. Born in Detroit, Michigan, Juliana grew up enjoying academics and giving back—her time as a Girl Scout sparked an early passion for community outreach that’s stayed with her through the years.

Juliana attended college in southwest Michigan—an area fondly known as the “fruit belt”—where fate stepped in on a blind date and introduced her to Bob, the man who would become her husband. At the time, Bob had just joined the Marines, serving during the tense days of the Cuban Missile Crisis. Together, Juliana and Bob built a life rooted in love, dedication, and family.

After college, Juliana taught home economics and child development, sharing her knowledge and nurturing the next generation. She and Bob went on to raise three children—two daughters, Susan and Amy, and a son, Scott. Looking back, Juliana counts raising her children as her greatest accomplishment, and nothing makes her prouder than seeing the people they’ve become and all they have achieved.

Her sense of curiosity and adventure didn’t stop at home. Juliana’s travels have taken her to Norway, Denmark, Sweden, and Italy—experiences that have enriched her life and broadened her perspective.

Whether you catch her sharing stories about Michigan’s “fruit belt” or talking about her family’s milestones, you’ll find Juliana’s warmth and outlook inspiring. She reminds us all that a life well-lived is filled with service, discovery, and, above all, love for family.

The Power of Connection: Why Senior Living Is Good for the Mind and Heart

Social connection plays a powerful role in protecting mental and emotional well-being as we age, yet it is often one of the first things to fade when seniors live alone. Changes in health, mobility or daily routine can make it harder to stay socially engaged, leading many older adults to experience isolation without realizing it. Moving into a senior living community like Legacy Village of Hendersonville can be a meaningful step toward restoring connection, purpose and a sense of belonging as well as a means to keeping the mind sharp.

One of the greatest benefits of senior living is the built-in opportunity for daily interaction. Instead of relying on occasional visits or scheduled outings, residents are surrounded by peers and team members who become part of everyday life. Shared meals, group activities and casual conversations create natural moments of connection that help seniors feel less alone and more emotionally supported. Friendships formed often become deep and meaningful, offering comfort during both joyful and challenging moments.

Social engagement also supports mental sharpness and emotional resilience. Legacy Village of Hendersonville offers structured programs such as musical events, games, classes and creative activities that encourage conversation and learning. These experiences help keep the mind active while providing excitement for the days ahead. For many seniors, having something to look forward to each day makes a meaningful difference in overall outlook.

For families, choosing senior living can bring peace of mind. Knowing a loved one is socially connected and emotionally supported eases concerns about loneliness and isolation. Families often notice positive changes after a move, including improved mood, increased engagement and a renewed sense of joy in their loved one’s daily life.

Ultimately, moving into a senior living community is not about giving something up. It is about gaining connection, companionship and support. By prioritizing social interaction and meaningful relationships, Legacy Village of Hendersonville helps seniors protect their mental and emotional health while enjoying a fuller, more connected way of life.

After the busy holiday season, many seniors notice changes in energy levels, mobility or comfort, making the New Year a natural time for families to pause and consider what support will help their loved ones feel their best. New Year care focuses on thoughtful steps that nurture independence, confidence and quality of life throughout the year. For some seniors who may be feeling the effects of aging, a senior living community that emphasizes whole-person wellness, such as Legacy Village of Hendersonville, can offer the right balance of support, connection and peace of mind for both residents and families.

One important part of New Year care is access to therapy services that help seniors maintain strength, balance and independence. Physical and occupational therapy can play a key role in improving mobility, supporting recovery and enhancing daily routines. At Legacy Village, therapy services are coordinated with care teams, making it easier for residents to participate consistently and work toward goals that support long-term wellness.

Pain management is another essential focus as seniors begin the year. Chronic pain can affect more than just physical comfort; it can also impact mood, sleep and overall quality of life. Senior living communities take a comprehensive approach to pain management, combining medical oversight, therapy, movement and comfort-focused strategies. This collaborative care helps ensure concerns are addressed early, allowing residents to remain engaged and comfortable in their daily lives.

Staying active is a powerful way for seniors to support both physical and emotional well-being. Regular movement helps maintain flexibility, strength and balance while also encouraging social connection. At Legacy Village of Hendersonville, residents have access to a variety of opportunities to stay active, from gentle exercise classes and walking groups to wellness programs designed to meet residents where they are. These activities are thoughtfully structured to be safe, enjoyable and empowering.

Equally important to physical care is the social connection that supports mental and emotional wellbeing. Legacy Village offers daily opportunities for meaningful interaction, whether through shared meals, group activities, creative programs or simple conversations with neighbors and team members who truly know each resident. These moments of connection help reduce feelings of isolation, encourage a sense of belonging and bring joy to everyday life.

For families, knowing a loved one is supported by a compassionate team that prioritizes therapy, pain management and active living can provide lasting peace of mind. By focusing on whole-person wellness, Legacy Village of Hendersonville help residents begin the year feeling supported, capable and connected, creating a strong foundation for health and happiness in the months ahead.

Born on August 29, 1942, in Tupelo, Mississippi, Diane Callendar has always been surrounded by the gentle comforts of music and family. While studying Business Administration at Ole Miss, Diane met her husband, Billy, and together they built a wonderful life—married in 1963, raising three sons (John, Bryan, and Lee), and delighting in five beloved grandchildren: Amy, Ben, Caty, Sam, and Natalie.

Music has been Diane’s constant companion. Whether she’s quietly seated in the theater, eyes closed, singing along, or joining any creative or music-centered activity, her love for melody and harmony shines through. “Music stays with me all day and reminds me of the feelings I had with my family,” Diane reflects. Though naturally mild-mannered, Diane’s comfort shows in these moments—she now sings freely, filling the room with her beautiful voice for anyone to enjoy.

Her warm humor comes out when remembering her family’s school rivalries. A lifelong Ole Miss fan, Diane laughs about her husband’s initial reluctance as their sons attended LSU: “He eventually got over it!” After years in Mississippi, Diane moved to Tennessee to be closer to family—embracing change but always keeping loved ones and music close at heart.

Diane became part of our Legacy Village of Hendersonville family in October 2024, quickly becoming a treasured presence in our community. For Diane, happiness is simple: “Spending time with family and her music.” If you catch her at mealtime, chances are she’s enjoying her favorite—spaghetti or pasta with a salad and roll.

Dorace Black: Supervisor of Smiles in The Harbor

Resident Spotlight: When you walk down the halls of The Harbor at Legacy Village of Hendersonville these days, you’re likely to hear laughter — not the soft, polite kind, but the real, uncontainable belly laughs that ripple down the corridor and invite everyone in.

           Resident Spotlight

When you walk down the halls of The Harbor at Legacy Village of Hendersonville these days, you’re likely to hear laughter — not the soft, polite kind, but the real, uncontainable belly laughs that ripple down the corridor and invite everyone in. That’s usually a sign that Dorace Black is nearby. Since arriving in June 2024, he’s been more than just a resident. Dorace has a way of lighting up a room the way sunrise breaks into a quiet kitchen, bringing humor and an unshakeable spark wherever he goes.

Born on February 10, 1949, in the small town of Bolivar, Tennessee, Dorace grew up under the watchful eye of his beloved Aunt Louise. Even as a boy, you could sense he was built for big adventures; by the time he was twelve, he’d already ventured beyond the boundaries of rural Tennessee, eager to see what lay beyond the familiar fields and porches of home.

Dorace graduated from Cameron High School in 1967. Not long after, he joined the Navy — swapping the green hills of his childhood for the endless blue of the open water. He built a family with his wife, Gloria, and together they raised two daughters, Shanell Black Southall and Latonya King, along with a son, Greg McKnight. Family, to Dorace, is everything, and his daughter Shanell is always ready with a story about her father’s resilience and wit.

One such story comes from a hard moment in his life: Dorace’s amputation, which resulted from a fall at home. It could have been a moment for self-pity, but that’s simply not in his nature. Instead, he greeted the first visitors to his hospital room with a grin, spinning a tall tale: “A shark bit my leg… just one bite!” That’s classic Mr. Black — always choosing laughter, even when life hands him something bitter.

Ask him about his favorite foods, and his eyes light up with memories of Tennessee – plates piled high with fried chicken, rich macaroni and cheese, and turnip greens cooked just right. When he talks about family gatherings, you can almost hear the clatter of serving spoons and the murmur of shared stories over supper.

Within The Harbor community, Dorace is more than a resident; he calls the others his coworkers, and reminds everyone that he’s the Supervisor. It’s not hard to believe—he keeps spirits high with a quick quip or a well-timed grin, always ready to find the jokes tucked between the routines of daily life.

He once announced with a twinkle in his eye, “I think I might just spend the night here tonight and get up early for work tomorrow. I do not want to drive home tonight after dinner!” Lines like that are classic Dorace, and they linger in the air long after he’s rolled his wheelchair down the hall.

Dorace Black’s gift is simple but powerful — everywhere he goes, he leaves a trail of joy and connection, brightening days and reminding us what’s possible when you choose joy, even when life is unpredictable. Spend a little time with him, and it’s hard not to feel grateful for the laughter and kindness he so freely shares.

Meet Barbara Duvall, whose gentle Kentucky accent still carries the warmth of southern hospitality. Born in Charlotte, North Carolina, Barbara’s heart truly belongs to Hopkinsville, Kentucky, where she spent most of her days and built a lifetime of memories.

From the time she was a fifth grader, Barbara could be found on the sidelines, pom-poms in hand, cheering for her Hopkinsville High School teams. Her spirit and smile never wavered—traits that caught the eye of a fellow student named Floyd Duvall, a natural athlete who threw himself into basketball, football, and baseball. Their love story began under the Friday night lights and continued to grow long after graduation.

Barbara and Floyd married soon after high school, starting a journey that would take them across the country and back again, following Floyd’s service with the Marine Corps. Life as a military family meant frequent moves, but for Barbara, San Diego, California, stands out as her favorite stop—sunshine, ocean breezes, and the feeling of adventure just beyond the next corner.

The Duvalls welcomed their first son, Floyd “Ray” Duvall Jr., in 1959, and as their family grew, so did Barbara’s sense of purpose. She worked for a car dealership as a young mother, always ready to lend a hand and share a laugh. Floyd made history himself, becoming the first male Marine Sergeant to lead the women’s division—a fact Barbara shares with pride.

When the time came for retirement, Barbara and Floyd found themselves back in Hopkinsville, ready for the next chapter. Barbara poured her energy and heart into the Christian County Health Department, while Floyd worked as a plumber, both continuing to serve their community in meaningful ways.

Ask Barbara about her greatest accomplishment, and she won’t hesitate: meeting Floyd and raising their five children. Theirs is a story of partnership, adventure, and devotion, spanning more than 66 years together—a lifetime built on love, loyalty, and shared dreams.

Julie joined Renaissance Senior Living of Hilldale nearly ten months ago, and anyone who’s spent even a little time with her knows she brings warmth everywhere she goes. She grew up in Hungary during the Soviet era, a time she still describes as “truly unimaginable.” Her father, once a Colonel General in the Air Force, was considered “undesirable” by the government, and the family lived under the constant threat of intrusion. One night, Julie remembers, armed men stormed into their home—no explanation, just fear. Not long after, while her father was on vacation, he was arrested and sent to a Russian prison camp, despite having all the right papers.

Through it all, Julie’s parents encouraged her to find joy and discipline where she could. At eight years old, she took up swimming—falling in love with the water, joining her high school team, and making a name for herself. She also enjoyed downhill skiing and gliding across an ice-skating rink. But no matter how hard she worked in school, the doors to higher education stayed closed to her in Hungary.

At sixteen, Julie’s family finally had the opportunity to leave Hungary for Austria, where they moved in with her grandmother. To do this, they had to give up their Hungarian citizenship—a heartbreaking choice that meant they could never return home. “We were all labeled undesirable,” Julie recalls, with a mix of sadness and pride at how far they’ve come.

Once in Austria, Julie worked as a waitress for two years while adjusting to her new life. Meanwhile, her brother had moved to America for college and quickly made a name for himself as a mechanical engineering professor at the University of Wisconsin. Inspired by his example, Julie decided to take her own leap and follow him to the United States.

She arrived not knowing a word of English. Her brother set her a challenge: learn 100 new words a day. Ambitious? Absolutely. But Julie managed it—within a year, she was reading, writing, and speaking English. She then attended Drew University in New Jersey, mastering multiple languages and graduating in just three years.

Her next adventure was a 30-year career with the Department of Labor in Trenton, New Jersey, which meant a 67-mile commute each day. It was no small feat, but Julie says she loved her work and the people she met along the way. Somewhere in those busy years, she also discovered her love for dogs, especially her loyal poodle, Foxy.

Last November, Julie made a new home here in Madison to be closer to her brother and niece. She’s embraced life here with her trademark optimism and curiosity. Ask anyone, and they’ll tell you: stop by for a chat, and Julie will greet you with a story and a smile.

Legacy Senior Living and Dominion Senior Living to Offer New Alzheimer’s Support Services Headed by Dr. Ronald Harvard

Legacy Senior Living is excited to announce a new Alzheimer's Support Service to families caring for loved one's with memory loss disorders.

Cleveland, Tenn. (Feb. 2024) — Legacy Senior Living and Dominion Senior Living, a family of senior living communities serving the Eastern United States, are excited to announce Alzheimer’s Support Services, a new program for both companies. This is a free service that is designed to give support and resources to families and caregivers who are navigating the pressures of caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s or other memory loss conditions.

Dr. Ronald Harvard has come aboard as the Director of Alzheimer’s Support Services. As a pastor, counselor, college professor and primary caregiver to his late wife, Linda, who suffered from Alzheimer’s for 20 years, Dr. Harvard brings many years of experience to this new program. At various times, Dr. Harvard has served his alma mater, Lee University, as a faculty member in the psychology department, as Director of Counseling, and as an adjunct faculty member at Lee Online. He and Linda also served as senior pastor at churches in Florida, Indiana, and Georgia.

With degrees in Biblical Studies, Social Psychology, and Pastoral Counseling, Dr. Harvard’s love for teaching and counseling have defined his life, but no more so than the love of his life, Linda, and their four children.

Dr. Harvard’s introduction to Alzheimer’s was personal and very painful. In the fall of 2003, Dr. Harvard recognized the beginning signs of memory loss in his late wife, Linda. Fifteen years later, Linda became a resident of a Legacy Senior Living community, The Harbor at Legacy Village of Cleveland. In May of 2023, Linda passed away. Dr. Harvard chronicled his struggles and victories in his blog, “Dementia: walking victoriously through the ‘Long Goodbye,’” offering lessons learned, meditations, and comfort to many.

“What became clear to me during the process of loving Linda through the battle of Alzheimer’s, was that I was being prepared to minister to families going through similar situations. My mission in leading this new Alzheimer’s Support Service is to provide behavioral insights, practical direction and comfort through support groups and one-on-one meetings,” said Dr. Harvard.

“This is a program that we are so excited to offer to families that are struggling with the challenges of memory loss. We are eager to welcome Dr. Harvard to this position as he supports other family members and caregivers navigating this overwhelming season,” said Barry Ray, CEO and Co-Founder of Legacy Senior Living.

HENDERSONVILLE, TENN. (March 2023) — A spirit of celebration was evident as Legacy Village of Hendersonville honored the finalization of a $1 million renovation of their new facility. Since purchase in Nov. 2021 from Main Street Assisted Living, Legacy Village of Hendersonville has been dedicated to updating the building and expanding the facility to enhance services provided in The Harbor, Legacy Senior Living’s innovative memory care unit, as well as refreshing the décor to reflect an era reminiscent of the residents’ younger days. Legacy Village of Hendersonville is proud to offer a premier assisted living and memory care facility to Sumner County that allows residents to live each day to the fullest, providing an intentional and meaningful community, comfortable amenities and peace of mind for family members.

“Maintaining your own health is key to caring well for a family member who needs ongoing attention, so it’s not selfish to need time to yourself. We’ve learned, though, that many family caregivers feel they can’t step away, and also feel they can’t travel to see other loved ones during the holidays. This is where our ‘Home for the Holidays’ program comes in. With respite care, family caregivers are relieved to know their loved one will be comfortable, entertained and professionally cared for at all times, even more than if you hired a part-time caregiver in the home,” said Darla Brawner, Sales & Marketing Director at Legacy Village of Hendersonville.
